Curriculum: The core curriculum is completed in 18 months through nine block sessions. Students also take Foundations of Patient Care, a course that spans the first two years and teaches clinical and interviewing skills. They may also enroll in electives to supplement required coursework.
Clinical Training: Third year students complete six required 2-month clerkships at a variety of teaching sites in the San Francisco Bay Area. They may choose between the Traditional Program, which offers one clerkship at a time, or a Structured Program, which offers an integrated, longitudinal experience at one of several hospitals. All students will go through a 12 month Longitudinal Clinical Experience in which they develop a long-term relationship with physician mentors and a specific patient population. Fourth year students have the flexibility to take clinical electives, do research, or work abroad.
Student Support: During the first year, small group sessions help students navigate their way through the UCSF medical school experience. Career advisors help students with specialty selection and the residency application process.
